Is medical coding and billing a good career choice?
I’m 22 considering graduate school or a career in medical billing and coding. The grad education would be in writing, which is most likely useless education (and yes, education can be useless the way the economy is.) So I’m wondering if working in a doctor’s office would be the smarter long-term career move. I don’t think I have the mental energy to be a student for life. Now, I just want a decent job and a life that, well, is more adult than childish

How much are you looking to make? You don’t need a Degree for Medical Billing.

Medical billing and coding is definately safer. Theres a pretty big demand for it now and no matter where you go you’ll find a job like that.
Writing seems more like a crapshoot. You could end up doing well off but you could also end up working in fast food or something. Theres less education involved in medical coding and billing too so you don’t have to go to school forever.

Graduate school or medical billing? EEK, those are almost extreme ends of the career scale!

And what do you mean writing is useless? You’re asking via the Internet, which is the most fertile ground for writers since the invention of paper.

Not to mention, now that the screenwriter’s strike is over, that opens up another domain you apparently haven’t considered.

Don’t do medical billing and coding as career the pay sucks, take my word for it. If you are almost in graduate school try using your degree for other jobs than Medical Billing. If your BA/BS is in the medical field than try working as Vet Tech while going to Graduate school…Vet techs make the same amount of money and give you hands on medical experience even it is non-human. My best friend did it instead of medical billing and she is Head ER Nurse in SA. Medical Billing gets you Medical Billing, nothing more.

My friend, do BOTH! Right now MT Advantage Career Center is offering their ADVANCED Medical Transcription program for just $2595.00 ($1,000 off the regular price) and if you pay in full, they will give you their coding/billing/ and health insurance programs FREE OF CHARGE!

Learn MT, Coding, Billing to help you while you go through grad school. It’s a skill you’ll always have. If writing is in your passion, who cares if you don’t make much doing it. It’s what your heart and soul seek after that is important ultimately. Use MT, coding, billing to pay the bills and go after your dreams.

Just the advice of a 44-year-old woman who is an MT and writes on the side : )

    Best wishes to you.
