How can I improve my frame rate and quality in Flight Simulator X?
Ok, I’m really not a game but I felt in love with the new Flight Simulator X. It’s pretty awsome but it really needs a good computer to run it.
Here is what I have now:
HP Media Center m7250n
Pentium D 820
200g Sata HD
- I have upgraded to 2gb DDR2 667MhZ
As for my video card, the one that comes with it is a X300 from ATI. I put all my FS setting at medium-high for the test
Knowing that this card is not really good I tried the ATI X800XL 256Meg. I find some pretty neat results at 30fps but close to the ground, I barely get 15 and less fps witch really sucks, specially for landings! In Windows Vista, in the performance rating, I get 5.9 for Areo and 4.9 for gaming with this card.
I exchanged that for a NVidia 7300XT with 512MB of Ram and the results is almost the same except I have around 19fps close to the ground. In vista, I have 4.5 for Areo and 4.4 for Gaming.
I wish to have around 25fps in all mode but I dont want to spend more then 175$us. Any tips???
Just an Update, I am running Windows Vista 32 with DirectX 10. I have fully updated my windows, I have the latest NVidia Drivers and there is no current FSX updates available.

Note that some of the stuff in there is for FS9.
You could also install FSX SP1 when it comes out, it’s supposed to have some preformance improvements because you aren’t alone in having preformance problems.

Try downloading updates for the game? Update video drivers? Your processor isn’t that great for gaming, but I don’t see why it would be performing that bad. Does it do this for all games?

I would suggest looking on Newegg for a video card. The Nvidia 7900GS looks more than capable and fits well within your budget. You can find the link to the 7900GS below. The other link is to an interactive video card performance chart. Simply choose which cards to compare and which benchmark and you will see a chart highlighting the fps for each in red.
Newegg has 3 7900GS for less than $175 including shipping. Great site, fast service. I have purchased many fine products from Newegg.
